Supporting Women with Perinatal Emotional Complications: Recognizing, Supporting and Referring for Doulas

Sometimes you know your clients are struggling, something isn’t quite right and maybe you just can’t put your finger on it. Perhaps things are more obvious and you know a client is really struggling with depression, anxiety, or other symptoms. How can you help? This workshop led by Catharine McDonald, perinatal therapist, family life educator and licensed professional counselor, will give you tools to enhance your practice and care not only support women around the birth process, but around their emotional experiences in fertility, pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

Our workshop will cover:

  • Understanding differences between Perinatal Anxiety, Depression, OCD & Psychosis

  • Learn red flags for perinatal emotional complications

  • Distinguish different types of birth trauma

  • Discuss mental health implications of birth trauma

  • Recognize when clients are in need of professional support

  • Guidance on how to make helpful and successful referrals

  • Learn about clinical limitations and the doula-therapist relationship

  • Know the risks of women engaging in therapy with a provider without perinatal training

  • Guidelines for how to identify perinatally-informed therapists in your area

We will review case examples of successful doula-therapist collaboration and you will have plenty of time to have all of your mental health questions answered.
